Rockstar Games never followed through on its plans to release Grand Theft Auto V single-player DLC, which would expand the story featuring the trio of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.

Four years after its release, GTA V sales are still going strong, but with no single-player DLC in sight. In an interview, Rockstar Games finally explained why players have not received additional single-player content.

No ‘GTA V’ Single-Player DLC: Why?

Shortly after its launch, Rockstar Games said that it was planning to release single-player DLC for GTA V to continue the adventures of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor in Southern San Andreas. However, those plans never materialized.

Players thought that with the success of GTA Online, the multiplayer component of GTA V, Rockstar Games decided to skip single-player content and focus instead on GTA Online. There were also theories that Rockstar Games no longer believed that gamers were attracted to single-player story modes and add-ons.

In an interview with Game Informer, Rockstar Games director of design Imran Sarwar finally revealed the reason behind the missing story expansion for GTA V.

“No, it was not really a conscious decision, it’s just what happened,” Sarwar said, adding that Rockstar Games still loves single-player content for storytelling and world immersion purposes.

Sarwar attributed the missing single-player DLC for GTA V to three reasons. First, Rockstar Games spent a lot of time remastering and re-releasing the game for the current-generation consoles and the PC. Second, the growth of the highly profitable GTA Online used a lot of the developer’s resources. Third, Rockstar Games moved on to creating an entirely new game instead of expanding the story of GTA V. That new game is Red Dead Redemption 2.

“Not everything is always possible, but we still love single-player open-world games more than anything.” Sarwar said,

‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ Coming Soon

The highly anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to arrive in spring 2018, as the game was delayed from its original fall 2017 release date.

“We would love to do more single-player add-ons for games in the future,” Sarwar said in the interview. This likely means that players looking forward to Red Dead Redemption 2 can also expect single-player DLC to be released for the game, unless Rockstar Games is again sidetracked for certain reasons.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will likely have its own online multiplayer component. The mode’s success and revenues will likely be part of the decision on whether Rockstar Games will release single-player DLC for the game.
